Some information about maidan wardak province Afghanistan
During the reign of King Zahir Shah in 1336 lunar Hijra [1957 A.D] Maidan Wardag was announced as a single province. Before becoming a province it was a district of Loghar and some districts of the province were also belonging to Ghazni.
At first it was called only Wardag [Persian pronunciation:Vardak=Wardak] and its first ever capital was Kot-e- Ashro. But during the reign of Sardar Muhammad Daud [1973-1978] the capital shifted to [Maidan Shar] and it became the second capital of Wardag Province.
When Mujahideen (holy-war fighters] beat red- aggressors, with the assistance of Anti- Russian support along love of independence and communist regime broke down in Afghanistan. The local commanders of Maidan Shar took control of the provincial capital [1992]. They added [Maidan, which means ground or desert in Pashto Language] to the Wardag and started calling the province, Maidan Wardag instead of only Wardag.
But until now, some Wardags do not accept [Maidan Wardag] as a province name. They prefer call it only [Wardag] or [Wardag-Maidan].
Wardag as a clan Name:
Originally Wardag is the name of a famous Pashtoon clan. The person who belongs to the clan is named Wardag and also the place where Wardags dwell is called Wardag.
Wardags [Wardag People] believe that they are relations of Zadrann and Mangal Pashtoons, Zadrann and, Mangal also think that they are blood-related. (According to folk stories). This folkloric claim can be proved by dialectual comparative study of Wardag, Mangal and Zadrann dialects.
But some other Wardags claim, that they are [Sayeds] descendents of [Sayed Gaiso Daraz], who was a religious saint and descended from [Hazrat Bibi Fatima, only live daughter of Hazrat Muhammad [pbuh]. The descendents of Hazrat Bibi Fatima are called [Sayeds] and they are supposed more respectful among Muslims.
This claim is supposed wrong now. But it can be claimed from the sacred texts of Avesta that Wardags were very religious during Zarathoshtra and they had opposed the religious reformation of him. In other words they were the opposite of Zoroastrianism and the religious reformation.
Wardag in History:
1. The famous Afghan historian [Muhammad Ali Kohzad] writes in his book [Da Afghanistan Pakhwanai Tareekh= Ancient History of Afghanistan] that Werdega [Wardag] and Barsaya [Brrayss] have been mentioned in Vedas [1800-1000 BC]”
2. Ptolemy mentions in Second century A.D [Orthak-ana] near [Hindo-Kush] Mountains. This is most related to Thakana a place in Maidan Wardag Province.
3. Ptolemy also says that “there is a city [Vartheka] near the source of Kabul River[ Kabul River flows from [Onai], which is between Kabul and Maidan Wardag Provinces] this word seems more near to Wardag.
4. “The Chinese traveler [Heon Thsang] in seventh century A.D mentions a place [Dargisthana] near Kabul”, which is probably [Wargi-sthanah= Wardagi-sthana] means land of Wardags, Like Turkmenistan means [Turkmen’s land], Afghanistan [Afghans’ land] etc.”
